The Effect of Alcohol as We Age

The Effect of Alcohol as We Age

April is National Alcohol Awareness Month. Each year, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence uses this time to increase awareness on the problems of alcohol abuse as well as other issues with alcohol. This is a great time to educate ourselves on the ways that alcohol can truly affect us, especially as we age.

The reality is alcoholic consumption has a greater effect on our bodies as we age than when we were younger. Our bodies metabolize alcohol at a slower rate, making the effects of alcohol linger in our systems for longer periods of time. While we might have been able to have two glasses of wine with dinner in our 30s, with little effect, the same cannot be said for when we are in our 60s.

There are also concrete health concerns when it comes to aging, alcohol and the increased use of prescription drugs. Many over-the-counter and prescription medications can become dangerous, and even deadly, when taken while consuming alcohol. Alcohol consumption can also worsen medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, memory loss, and mood disorders.

The National Institutes of Health recommends that adults 65 and over limit themselves to no more than 7 drinks a week and no more than 3 drinks in a day. If you routinely take prescription as well as over the counter medication it is important that you consult your healthcare practitioner regarding adverse reactions of your medication with alcohol. Also, talk to your doctor if you feel you need to stop drinking altogether.
